Nikki Yelvington, possibly better known as @roughhgem, is most definitely a rare gem whom we are lucky to have had the pleasure of working with on our campaign "Palace in Paradise". I remember the first time I met her I was sitting in the corner of a local coffee shop in south Jax Beach...She walked in so effortlessly in the cutest white and black polka dot mini dress. With her hair in a short bob I would have never known this was a recent, somewhat impulse, decision to chop her long brunette locks. Her style that day reminiscent of the 60s yet, refreshingly modern and perfectly polished makes you look at her and wonder "Who is she?". My thoughts exactly, and then I realized omg that is Nikki! As she sat down and we began to chat I was immediately at ease, Nikki is (again) one of those rare gems that you talk too for the first time yet feel like you've known them for a while. We dove into the ideas for the shoot and it was vividly clear that we shared the same vision.

Fast forward a month or so and it's shoot day. Rise and shine! We started early in the morning and it was gold from the start. Our backdrop a beautiful mediterranean style home with views of the intracoastal and our effortless muse Heather Watkins (@heatherwatkins) fresh faced and ready to go. The first shots were on the back patio and Nikki chose to shoot in front of a pair of chocolate brown french doors. Now, mind you I could not see what she saw in the doors but I knew she was a pro so I wasn't going to stand in her way. The next thing I know she is showing me the photos and the reflections in the window showed silhouettes of the palms and flowing water. To say I was in awe is an understatement. She saw so much more than a pair of simple french doors. Nikki's eye is incredibly special. She is an absolute dream to work with and the photos speak for themselves.

Check out the interview below to learn a little more about the girl behind the lens:

1. How did you get started in photography?

I started years ago as a teenager taking photos of bands actually. I had the pleasure of working with some amazing guys such as The Plain White Tees and Between the Trees, but I stopped for a while to pursue a more lucrative career. I began again a little over a year ago after some time as a fashion blogger. I really missed the control of being behind the camera vs in front of and now I can’t get enough.

2. What is your favorite part about photography?
I love the small behind-the-scenes part that goes with photography more than anything. It’s often that I’m not only the photographer, but the stylist and creative director as well. The result of every thing coming together is invigorating, and it’s especially exciting when the model loves your work as well.
3. What inspires you the most during a shoot?
The model, always. I typically begin my creating process by seeking someone out, and then I decide on location and style based on the vibe that she gives off. I always want to put a model somewhere that she feels natural, so that we can get an authentic life-styled shot.
4. Who is your ultimate muse?
Brigette Cooper. She’s an amazing Australian model with a very unique look.

5. Describe your dream photo shoot.

I’m fortunate to have an amazing backdrop for my photos here in Florida, but my dream spot would have to be the Amalfi Coast, with Brigette Cooper wearing Loveshackfancy, my favorite romantic brand.

Nikki you are goals, looking forward to more exciting collabs ahead!
